Dr. Joel Gagnier
Dr. Joel Gagnier will be joining our Department as an Associate Professor and Basic Scientist as of January 1, 2022. This will be a joint appointment with the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. Dr. Gagnier comes to us from the University of Michigan, where he is an Associate Professor with Tenure in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Epidemiology and directs the clinical epidemiology in orthopaedic surgery (C.E.O.S.) lab.
Dr. Gagnier trained clinically as a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) and obtained a MSc and PhD in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Toronto. He then completed post-doctoral training in Clinical Epidemiologic Methods at the University of Michigan. Dr. Gagnier’s research focuses on musculoskeletal conditions, specifically improving patient care outcomes, examining methodologies of clinical research in MSK, and investigating the MSK manifestations of COVID-19.
Throughout his career, Dr. Gagnier has taught and supervised graduate students in a variety of programs as well as many junior faculty, fellows, residents and medical students. He has taught courses in clinical epidemiology, meta-analyses, psychometrics/measurement, clinical research methods, critical appraisal, evidence-based medicine and other related areas.
Dr. Gagnier has received grant funding from CIHR, NIH, AHRQ, FDA, PCORI, several foundations and from the University of Michigan. He has more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and sits on various committees and editorial boards. He currently serves as Chair of the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) Clinical Research Committee (now task force), Co-Chair of the ORS Educational Committee, and was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Sage Publishers journal Research Methods. He is also actively involved with the international research groups OMERACT, Cochrane, and the Equator Network/CONSORT Group.
